Adriel clung onto me though my hands and feet were bound. “Sebastián, what is this place?”

I glanced around the chamber. All around us sat angelic beings in judgement. Their golden robes seemed to pulsate with light. “Some sort of kangaroo court would be my best guess.”

A chorus of disgruntled voices chanted for my silence.

“You have no voice here, Vampyre,” one cried from the rafters.

“I demand to know why you have brought us here?”

“Nor do you have the right to demand anything.”

“Then tell me…” Adriel added. “… am I not one of you?”

“Not any longer…”

“Yeah, yeah,” I interrupted. “… cut the crap and tell us why we are here.”

“To stand trial for your crimes, of course.”

“What crimes? We don’t answer to you.”

“One of you most certainly does, yet you are both here because we deemed it acceptable.”

Decades of dreaming about passing through the gates, and I was finally here, but not as I’d wish to be. “Who are you?”

“I am Raguel, Angel of Justice.”

“Is that supposed to impress me?”

“I do not care, but you will be silent, or your punishment will be all the more severe.”

“You have no jurisdiction over vampires.”

“Point taken,” Raguel replied. “But we do over Adriel and judgement shall be passed now.”

“But I haven’t even had a fair trial,” Adriel protested.

“We see all, so justice is swifter.”

“Give her chance to explain, whatever it is you’ve charged her with, it’s a mistake.” I would stand by her side no matter the outcome.

“The decision has already been made.”

“I demand a fair trial,” Adriel cried, her plea bouncing off the walls of the chamber.

But he seemed to ignore her request. “Adriel, daughter of Andrew and Tilly, granddaughter of Abraham, for the crime of consorting with the Vampyre race, I strip you of your memories of him, and their parasitic kind.”

“You can’t do that,” she cried. “My memories are mine to keep.”

“Don’t do this,” I begged. “Kill me, do anything you want but don’t hurt her in this way.”

“My decision stands.”

The other angels were now in uproar, but Raguel paid them no mind and delivered his final judgement.

“Please don’t…” Adriel begged. “… anything but that.”

Cries of protest continued to ring out but were suddenly silenced by his ear-splitting roar. “ENOUGH!” The ground shook beneath their feet. “Vengeance is mine.”

“I am begging you,” she sobbed. “… don’t do this.”

“The decision is irreversible.”

“But I compelled her,” I interrupted, lying in a last-ditch attempt to protect her. “It was all my fault. Adriel had no idea what she was doing.”

Raguel approached me. “My, my, my, such arrogance your disgusting breed displays.” His eyes blazed with fury. “But I confess you are a step above the others of your filthy, vile race that I have had the misfortune to deal with over millennia.”

“I am telling the truth.” I struggled against my binds.

“You lie,” Raguel accused. “To save the woman you love. A being you have no right to love.”

“You don’t have to do this, Sebastián,” Adriel cried.

“It is the only way to keep you safe.”

Raguel clapped his hands.
